Second Wind: Our Company

Twentyfour years have passed since pro sailor Ralf Sifford (US 27) opened the doors at Second Wind Sail Surf & Kite. Back in 1985, with $500 in his pocket, Ralph rented a 400sf retail space and brought most of his merchandise in on consignment. His goal was to make windsurfing and surfing affordable for the hundreds of water enthusiasts who visit Maui annually. In those days, the shop closed at 1:30pm and the whole staff hit the water.

Second Wind has steadily grown to be one of Maui’s heavyweights in the windsurfing and surfing industry. Today Second Wind – a play on “second-hand”- is a 3,500sf windsurfing and surfing retail, rental, consignment, lessons and travel shop.

We’ve managed to preserve the comfortable atmosphere of the early years which has been the key to the shop’s success. Our staff is dedicated to upholding the reputation as “Maui’s friendliest shop” which is why customers have made Second Wind their shop year after year. Our goal is to continue bringing quality gear to you at affordable prices. We’re now open 364 days a year from 9am to 6pm, but the whole staff is still driven by a passionate addiction to both surfing and sailing, and you can always spot a few of us out on the water every day.
