Maui Vacations with Second Wind

kitebeachA continuing reputation as the number one windsurfing destination in the world, coupled with what have been called the best beaches in the world, make Maui a perfect vacation spot for those wanting to mix hardcore play with rest and relaxation. And you don’t have to save up for a lifetime in order to have the vacation of a lifetime.

Maui’s five star luxury oceanfront resorts have created a reputation of being one of the most expensive travel destinations in the world. In reality, there is a full spectrum of accommodations from budget studios to oceanfront villas that cater to the economical traveler.

The biggest decision you’ll have to make is whether to stay on the North or South Shore (the West side tourist areas of Lahaina and Ka’anapali are a long haul from most sailing sites).

Maui’s South Shore

The South Shore is generally a resort/condo area. The two main overlapping towns of Kihei and Wailea are booming with hotels and fully equipped condominiums.

If you’re after the “nightlife”, fine dining and shopping when you’re not sailing or surfing, then you’ll want to stay on this side of the island. Condos are a popular and affordable choice for Maui’s visitors.

Most have tropically landscaped grounds, lanais, BBQs, tennis courts, gyms, spas, saunas, jacuzzis, and swimming pools. Interiors are generally furnished Island Style and all have fully equipped kitchens, cable TV, phone and laundry facilities.

Many North Kihei properties have windsurfing and surfing launch sites and are only 15-20 minutes from Kanaha Beach Park.

Maui’s North Shore

The North Shore properties are generally more private than other areas on Maui. This side of the island covers Sprecklesville, Pa’ia, Ku’au, Ha’iku, and Makawao. Rather than condos, this side of the island offers apartments, duplexes, houses, and cottages in lightly populated residential areas. These locations also have a number of excellent shops and restaurants as well.

If you’re looking for a quieter stay in a less tourist oriented area, this is where you’ll probably want to be.
